When I found this idea, I thought I was really really onto something. The idea was to make some tools to be able to "comb" the beach sand...you can see them above. They're the wooden things that nobody is using, but I am photographing!!!
Daddy lovingly drew the templates and cut them out with a jigsaw! They are 4x8 inches...in case you're brave enough, (or hopeful enough like me), to try this craft!
He did a pretty good job!
Ruby sanded them, (which I thought would mean she would LOVE to play with them). After the sanding, I put some beeswax polish on them.
She did give them a try...to humour me! While she was doing this another little girl came over and looked at me suspiciously..."what are those things?" she asks. I tell her she can use them to make roads, or patterns in the sand...little girl, still eyeing me suspiciously says, "can I use one". Excitedly I say "YES!", with high hopes that some serious pattern making or road construction will ensue...instead she starts using it as a shovel...for 5 seconds, before tossing it aside for a more glamorous hot pink, plastic, dollar store shovel! What is with these kids nowadays!!!???
Ha!!!! Oh well...we'll chalk this one up to a flop for now...but, I'll be damned if I don't drag these toys with me to the beach until they catch on!!!
Feeling humbled

ReplyDeleteI love that you are not affraid of sharing something that flopped! I think it's a great idea though... maybe if you paint the tools in hot pink the girls will want to play with them more? ;)
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Ha Ha.
ReplyDeletexoxo
well at least they smelled nice with the bee's wax, yes?
ReplyDeleteLOL! They really do look like they'd make a fantastic fortress wall for a regal sand castle...
ReplyDeletelol - i LOVE the reality here...it's so true and i've had more than one of these kinds of 'flops'...
ReplyDeletei bet they'll eventually use them for something entirely other than their intended purpose and be thrilled with them...
:)
Funny and that is sooo how it goes sometimes. Love your honesty x
ReplyDeleteHave you tried adding a broom handle? My lot love using my long handled gardening tools in just the way you described. They can run along with them behind them, making lots of roads and patterns. Or maybe a sedate walk, which is safer, of course. You could always call it a work in progress then, rather than a crafting flop.
ReplyDeleteHa! Fun. My boys drag out rocks and branches to draw in the sand. I bet they would love something like that! ;)
ReplyDeleteI thought it sounded great but...thats kids for ya!!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.

Awesome idea!! your story made me laugh--- you never know what's going to be a success. thanks for this post, brought a smile to my face.
ReplyDeleteThat is a cool idea and one that many potters use for texture on their pots! Super fun. Give them time.. they will find all kinds of wonderful things to do with them! Sometimes I find it takes my kids weeks, months and even years to really use a new idea to its full potential!
ReplyDelete;o)
The surefire way to get them interested may be to claim them for yourself! I'll bet if you spent 20 minutes making patterns in the sand the combs would become utterly desirable :)
